Good News Alert: CAIR-NY Celebrates Arrival of 12-year-old Yemeni Girl Reunited With Her Mother

(NEW YORK, NY, 8/7/2024) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today celebrated the arrival of a 12-year-old Yemeni girl reunited with her mother after her application was stalled with no explanation from the Djibouti Embassy.

The young girl was separated from her mother and father for almost three years due to unreasonable delays in her immigration case. CAIR-NY began representing the family earlier this year in their immigration case and after persistent advocacy with the Embassy, the family was reunited here in New York in July.

The mother of the daughter stated:

"I thank Sister Lamya and CAIR-NY for their service to reunite me with my 12-year-old daughter. My family and I are so happy with the reunion, and I thank them for everything.”

Lamya Agarwala, Esq. Supervising Attorney at CAIR-NY, said in a statement:

“This family should never have had to wait so long to be together, and the injustice in their case represents systemic issues in our immigration system that too often target Muslim families. We are thrilled that this family is finally reunited, and CAIR-NY is honored to have represented this family in their fight to reunite.”

She encouraged Muslim New Yorkers to contact CAIR-NY for assistance if their immigration applications are facing unreasonable delays. To request assistance, go to: https://www.cair-ny.org/incident-report
