CAIR-NY Condemns Racist Verbal Abuse Targeting Black Pastor in Newburgh
(NEW YORK, NY, 6/14/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned a hateful, racist diatribe by a white supremacist targeting a Black pastor in Newburgh, NY.
The unsettling video, which the victim, Pastor RD McLymore Sr., shared on his Instagram account, shows the suspect raging at Pastor McLymore and spewing hateful, racist remarks such as “I’m an off-duty trooper, you f****ng [unintelligible] n****r,” and “You’re always a n****r... you’ll never be white.” According to the victim, the abuse was unprovoked. The man's claim that he is an off-duty trooper has been disproven by the New York State Police.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the shameless, white supremacist rage clearly on display in this video and applaud Pastor McLymore for sharing his pain with the world in order to expose this bigot’s detestable beliefs. Sadly, such incidents are becoming increasingly common, yet many are never reported. CAIR-NY urges other victims to follow Pastor McLymore’s lead in documenting and reporting any hate incidents to local authorities. If the man's claims to be a trooper are indeed false, we further urge the New York State Police to charge this man for his fraudulent statements. Impersonating an officer is a serious crime that should not go unpunished.”
Nasher emphasized that victims or bystanders should document incidents but only if they are able to maintain their safety. She encouraged New Yorkers to participate in CAIR-NY's upstander intervention workshops which train community members how to respond to hate and bias incidents.
She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR-NY has condemned several other disturbing hate incidents in recent weeks:
