CAIR-NY Condemns Assault, Robbery of Hispanic Man in Queens, Welcomes Hate Crime Probe

(NEW YORK, NY, 6/14/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned a vicious attack on a Hispanic man by an alleged assailant who reportedly beat the victim with a pipe while screaming anti-Hispanic insults, then robbed him.   

The attack occurred on Sunday evening in Elmhurst, Queens. According to police, the suspect approached the victim and screamed “I hate all Spanish people. I’m gonna rob you. I’m gonna f****ng kill you,” then beat the victim with a metal pipe and stole his wallet.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:   

“The depravity displayed by the racist who allegedly attacked the victim is appalling. This man was insulted, beaten with a pipe, then robbed apparently because his ethnicity. Thankfully, the victim's injuries are not life threatening. CAIR-NY condemns this hateful assault and the vile racism that seemed to inspire it, and we urge the NYPD to prioritize capturing the alleged assailant, who could pose a grave danger to the people of our great city.”  

She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.
