CAIR-NY Condemns Anti-Turkish Hate Crime in Manhattan

(NEW YORK, N.Y. 4/17/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the stabbing of male victim in Midtown Manhattan, during which the alleged assailant reportedly made anti-Turkish remarks.

According to police, the male victim was walking in Midtown Manhattan when he stabbed in the chest by a stranger yelling the “anti-nationality remarks” remarks. The victim is 24-years-old and is expected to recover.

The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating, and police released surveillance footage of the suspect who is still at large.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Legal Director Ahmed Mohamed said:

“We condemn the targeting of this young man and the hate that allegedly inspired the perpetrator. New Yorkers should not have to live in fear of random, hate-filled attacks. We need to stand together to stem the tide of hate targeting minority communities.”

Mohamed also expressed relief that the victim is expected to recover.

He noted that hate crimes in New York City have increased 76 percent so far this year compared to the same period last year.
