CAIR-NY Condemns Anti-Semitic and Anti-Asian Hate Crimes in New York

(NEW YORK, NY, 2/7/25) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned recent hate crimes targeting Jewish and Asian communities in New York City and urged authorities to take swift action against this hate-motivated violence.

According to police reports, on January 13, a 27-year-old man was attacked on a northbound F train around 7 a.m. as it approached the Parsons Boulevard subway station. The suspect allegedly made anti-Semitic statements before physically assaulting the victim, punching and slapping him, and attempting to grab his mezuzah necklace (pieces of parchment verses of the Torah and an identifier for their faith). The suspect then fled the train, and the victim declined medical attention.

In a separate incident, on January 16 at around 8 p.m., a 54-year-old woman was riding the 1 train near the Columbus Circle subway station when she was approached by a suspect who made anti-Asian statements towards her. The suspect then allegedly punched the woman in the head before fleeing the 59th Street subway station. The victim was treated at a hospital and has since been released. Police have classified the incident as a hate crime and released an image of the suspect in hopes that the public can help identify them.

CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher, Esq., stated:

“Hate crimes—whether targeting the Jewish, Asian, Muslim, or any other marginalized community—must be unequivocally condemned. An attack on one faith or ethnic community is an attack on all who believe in justice and dignity. We call on law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators of these heinous crimes are swiftly brought to justice and for city officials to take meaningful steps to combat the rising tide of hate violence.”

She urged all New Yorkers to stand in solidarity against bigotry and report hate crimes to authorities. Individuals with information about these incidents are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or visit crimestoppers.nypdonline.org.
