Temporary Staff Attorney

The Council on American Islamic Relations, New York (CAIR-NY) is a dynamic non-profit that aims to serve the American-Muslim community throughout the state of New York. CAIR-NY engages in a number of advocacy tools, including counselling potential clients, public education, media engagement, and strategic litigation to protect and advance civil liberties for all New Yorkers.
We are seeking a passionate lawyer to join the legal department based in New York City for a 4-month term, beginning on April 21 to cover for an attorney on parental leave. This is a full time, temporary position.

Description:

  • Position: Temporary Staff Attorney (Full-time)

  • Location: New York City, New York (hybrid in-person/remote)

  • Salary: 20,000-25,000 commensurate on experience (for the 4-month period)

Roles and responsibilities

  • Participate in all aspects of litigation including, but not limited to, client interviews, factual investigation, legal research, discovery, preparation of legal documents, negotiations

  • Conduct community education and outreach including Know-Your-Rights presentations 

  • Build or maintain relationships with clients, impacted communities, elected officials, law firms, law schools and legal clinics, allied legal groups, and other key stakeholders to advance the organization’s legal and policy work; 

  • Assist other staff in the production of internal and external reports; 

  • All CAIR-NY staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, and other office tasks.

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of post-law school experience

  • Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and advocate effectively

  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and priorities of CAIR-NY

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a public-interest setting 

  • Admission to the New York Bar

  • Fluency in Arabic, Urdu, or Bangla is a plus but not required.

Senior Litigation Attorney

CAIR-NY engages in a number of advocacy tools, including counseling potential clients, public education, media engagement, and strategic litigation to protect and advance civil liberties for all New Yorkers.

We are seeking a passionate and experienced litigator to join the legal department based in New York City. The Senior Litigation Attorney will be primarily responsible for managing all litigation matters before administrative, state, and federal bodies.

Description:

  • Position: Senior Litigation Attorney (Full-time)

  • Location: New York City, New York (hybrid in-person/remote)

  • Salary: $110,000- $140,000, based on years of experience

Roles and responsibilities

  • Conduct litigation in federal and state courts and in administrative forums. Preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs; conducting discovery; presenting oral arguments and handling appeals.

  • Engage in pre-litigation analysis and advocacy, including evaluating and following up on intakes; conducting factual investigations and legal analyses; utilizing the Freedom of Information Law and the Freedom of Information Act and preparing demand letters; and following through on negotiations.

  • Participate in public education on civil liberties and civil rights issues in the form of speaking engagements and published writings.

  • Act as lead attorney on all litigation matters and supervise junior staff on the case team

  • Coordinate with co-counsel, coalition partners, and other external partners as required

  • Contribute to the growth of CAIR-NY’s litigation practice


Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of litigation experience

  • Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and advocate effectively, including an ability to initiate and follow through on public-interest litigation or advocacy.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and priorities of CAIR-NY

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a public-interest setting

  • Admission to the New York Bar

  • Fluency in Arabic, Urdu, or Bangla is a plus but not required.
