CAIR-NY Applauds The New School Faculty Encampment
(NEW YORK, NY, 5/16/2024) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, applauds the faculty at The New School for setting up a faculty encampment.
In a nationwide trend, students have been peacefully protesting to advocate for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid to be sent to Palestine. However, the peaceful student protest at The New School was disrupted by the NYPD Strategic Response Group on May 3rd. The faculty Gaza solidarity encampment is the first of its kind, established on May 8th.

CAIR-NY's Executive Director, Afaf Nasher, stated:
“We commend the unwavering support of The New School faculty amidst the challenges our students face. In the face of potential repercussions to their careers, livelihoods and academic pursuits, these professors prioritize the urgent need for divestment.
“Their commitment serves as a beacon of inspiration during these challenging times and shows that caring about the genocide is not limited to our youth.”
She noted that CAIR-NY has called out The New School’s actions against student protesters, alongside other universities in New York on several occasions.
