MEDIA ADVISORY: CAIR-NY, BAAG, NYMAN to Hold Muslim Legislative Advocacy Day in State Capitol

(NEW YORK, NY, 5/22/2023) - On Tuesday, May 23, the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, along with the Bangladeshi American Advocacy Group (BAAG) and the New York Muslim Action Network (NYMAN), will hold Muslim Legislative Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. 

As part of the programming, CAIR-NY, BAAG and NYMAN will host a joint press conference addressing key topics that affect the Muslim community such as establishing broader school holidays like Eid, offering halal food in public schools, increasing the minimum wage, #BankingWhileMuslim, and the establishment of a New York Muslim American Advisory Council.

In a statement, CAIR-NY's Executive Director Afaf Nasher, Esq. said: “CAIR-NY is glad to partner with BAAG and NYMAN to advocate for Muslim New Yorkers in our State Capitol. There are over one million Muslims serving and uplifting New York State. It is imperative that their voices are heard within the chambers of those who promise to serve them. We look forward to actively engaging with elected officials and participating in the democratic process.”  

In a statement, BAAG’s President Joynal Abedin said: “I am delighted to announce our upcoming 9th Annual Advocacy Day, where we will gather in the State Capitol in Albany.  During this crucial event we will have the opportunity to meet with esteemed members of the Assembly and Senate, engaging in productive dialogue to advocate for our rights and discuss potential solutions to the pressing issues affecting the immigrant community in New York. Our aim is not only to be a voice for our community but to stand up for the rights and well-being of all immigrants and Americans.” 

In a statement, NYMAN’s President Mir Masum Ali said, “NYMAN is excited to convene in the State Capitol, pushing forward the concerns and advocacy efforts that are important to Muslim New Yorkers. The opportunity to speak directly with our elected officials helps our community to become more civically engaged, concentrates their voting power, and ultimately empowers them to elect responsible leaders into office.”
