BACKGROUND:
SEE: Request for Larger Prayer Space Denied, Advocacy Continues
Baruch College refuses to provide students with an adequate and appropriate space for religious activities. Students have met with the Baruch administration for several months to respectfully ask for an interfaith space that will reasonably meet their needs. Despite several pleas from students, the Baruch administration has failed to provide students with an adequate space for prayer and other interfaith activities. Baruch College’s failure to provide an adequate interfaith space affects all religious students. Any student who wishes to pray comfortably and observe their faith cannot do so under the current circumstances at Baruch College. This is why students of all faiths are demanding that the institution make a change.
Muslim students at Baruch are disproportionally impacted by the administration's decision to disregard the religious rights of its students. Muslims are required to pray five times a day and there is a significant Muslim population at Baruch. Despite the high number of Muslim students, Baruch has forced its Muslim students to pray in small, inaccessible areas on campus. As a result, students believe the administration is not providing an appropriate space because Baruch does not value its Muslim students.
Individuals can demand Baruch provide an interfaith space by sending an e-mail letter to the administration: bit.ly/baruchinterfaithspace
CAIR-NY offers a booklet, called “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help academic officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
