CAIR-NY Condemns Alleged Assault on Father Wearing Palestinian Scarf at Playground
(NEW YORK, NY, 11/9/2023) - The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned an alleged assault targeting a man wearing a Palestinian scarf, or keffiyeh, while he was at a playground with his son in Brooklyn.
A video shows a woman approaching the man and telling him he and his son have to go. She then proceeds to throw what appears to be her phone at the man, after which she throws hot coffee at him. The man said the woman accused him of “supporting Hamas.” The man said he has filed a police report.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“We are seeing a return of the post-9/11 hysteria and violence targeting anyone perceived to be Arab or Muslim. This attack on a father with his young son is absolutely despicable and we urge law enforcement authorities to be swift and thorough in investigating and apprehending a suspect. These bigoted attacks must stop.”
She noted that today, CAIR released data showing that its national office and local chapters have received an “unprecedented” increase in complaints of anti-Muslim or anti-Arab bias in the month since the escalation of violence in Israel and Palestine. CAIR-NY reports 131 complaints in the month since the escalated violence, marking a six-fold increase.
