(NEW YORK CITY, NY, 10/24/2023) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today called for hate crime charges for the suspect in a road rage murder of a Sikh man in New York City.

Jasmer Singh, 68, was attacked Thursday after getting into a car accident on the Wan Wyck Expressway. The driver of the car Singh accidentally hit reportedly assaulted him. Singh spent a day in the hospital before he died from his injuries. Singh’s family said the attacker referenced Singh’s faith and religious clothing, and they are asking police to pursue hate crime charges.

“We urge law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate whether there was a bias motive for this horrific crime and to bring appropriate charges based on the results of that investigation,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Singh family and the Sikh community of New York City.”

She noted that last week, CAIR-NY condemned the reported hate crime assault on Sunday of a Sikh young man wearing a turban.
