CAIR-NY Denounces Hateful, Anti-Asian Voice Message Targeting New York Senator John Liu
(NEW YORK, NY, 8/2/2022) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today denounced a racist and xenophobic message that an unidentified person reportedly left on New York State Senator John Liu’s office voicemail over the weekend.
Senator Liu, who is Taiwanese-American, arrived at his Bayside, N.Y., office Monday and was greeted with an expletive-laced, racist, and xenophobic voice message from an unidentified caller, who raged, “John, you lost my vote, you f**kin’ ch**k piece of sh*t…go back to f**kin’ China where you belong, you f**kin’ useless piece of sh*t."
Senator Liu shared a video of the vitriolic recording, along with his reaction, on his Twitter account.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:
“We condemn this despicable message and the racist caller who uttered it. Everyone has the right to criticize the policies and ethics of their elected officials. However, verbally assaulting someone on the grounds of race and demanding they return to their ancestral land is outrageous and unacceptable.
“We commend Senator Liu for his composed and poignant reaction to this disgraceful incident, which he called, ‘another day at the office.’ Sadly, it is just another day in the continuous brutalization of Asian-Americans, who are increasingly being targeted by racists.
“CAIR-NY stands with all members of the Asian-American community and affirms their equal right to live freely and peacefully in the United States of America.”
She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging racial supremacy, religious bigotry, xenophobia, and all other forms of hatred.
CAIR-NY has condemned several other disturbing hate incidents in recent weeks:
