CAIR-NY Welcomes Attempted Murder, Hate Crime Charges for Man Who Allegedly Assaulted Elderly Asian Woman in Yonkers
(NEW YORK, NY, 7/22/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed the indictment of a man who allegedly punched an elderly Asian woman more than 100 times, then stomped and spat on her while allegedly shouting anti-Asian and misogynistic insults.
According to police, Tammel Esco, 42, allegedly attacked the 67-year-old victim from behind as she was attempting to enter her Yonkers apartment building on the evening of March 11. The assailant allegedly mumbled “Asian b*tch” as he came up behind her, then punched her, knocking her down. He then allegedly beat her with his fists more than 100 times, kicked her, then spat on her before fleeing. He is facing several charges, including attempted murder in the second degree as a hate crime and assault in the first degree as a hate crime.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:
“We are relieved that the alleged assailant has been caught and is being charged in proportion to the depravity that he allegedly displayed in this horrific attack. It is a miracle that the victim survived. Sadly, anti-Asian violence has become an everyday occurrence in our city. Our Asian-American brothers and sisters deserve better. They should be able to work, play, and thrive in the City they contribute to everyday without fearing for their safety. Every New Yorker deserves at least that much."
She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging racial supremacy, religious bigotry, xenophobia, and all other forms of hatred.
CAIR-NY has condemned several other disturbing hate incidents in recent weeks:
