(NEW YORK, NY, 7/15/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned an alleged assault targeting an Asian woman and welcomed hate crime charges for the suspected perpetrator of another assault targeting two Asian women.

On Tuesday morning, a man allegedly hurled racist slurs at an Asian American woman, then kicked her as she stood at a street corner in Manhattan’s Chelsea district. Anyone with information about this incident should call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (English) or 1-888-57-PISTA (Spanish).

Derrick Johnson, 40, has been charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment for allegedly attacking two Asian women in a Manhattan subway station on May 8. Johnson reportedly approached the two women and dumped an unidentified liquid on them before shouting “you f***ing Chinese, I don’t know why you’re here in America.” He then reportedly lunged at one of the women, knocking her to the ground. Johnson then allegedly spat on her as she lay there badly bruised with swelling in her head and jaw.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:

“We condemn the continued racist and xenophobic attacks on members of the Asian-American community and implore the NYPD to exert all effort in finding and capturing the perpetrator of Tuesday’s assault and pursue hate crime charges against him.

“We are also relieved that the man who allegedly attacked two Asian-American women in a subway station has been arrested and charged in accordance with his heinous acts. We pray that the victim of the physical assault has recovered fully from her injuries, though we know that the trauma of the attack will haunt her and her companion forever. As the Declaration of Independence clearly states, we all have the inalienable, God-given right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,’ and no one, whether private citizen or public servant, has the right to take that away from us. We stand with our Asian-American sisters and brothers against their ongoing persecution and will continue to speak out in support of them.”

She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging racial supremacy, religious bigotry, xenophobia, and all other forms of hatred.

CAIR-NY has condemned several other disturbing hate incidents in recent weeks:
