CAIR-NY Condemns Arson Attempt Targeting Synagogue
(NEW YORK, N.Y., 5/21/2022) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned the attempted arson of a synagogue near Gramercy Park and urged swift apprehension of the alleged arsonist.
According to police, the incident occurred on May 19 at the Brotherhood Synagogue. An unidentified female reportedly approached the entrance to the synagogue, lit a book and a piece of cloth on fire, and then fled the scene. The synagogue was not damaged.
CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said in a statement:
“Any attack targeting a house of worship must be condemned in the strongest terms possible, with the alleged perpetrator apprehended swiftly to face the full force of the law. Americans of all faiths and backgrounds must join together in challenging the growing bigotry we are witnessing nationwide.”
She noted that CAIR-NY similarly condemned the drive-by shooting of a teenager dressed in traditional Jewish attire, which occurred in Brooklyn’s Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood.
Nasher added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging white supremacy, anti-Jewish hatred, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.
