CAIR-NY Calls for Hate Crime Probe into Possible Arson, Racist Vandalism in Monroe Co.
(NEW YORK, NY, 11/28/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today called for a hate crime investigation into a possible arson fire at a house, racist vandalism at an apartment complex, and another racist vandalism targeting a church in Monroe Co.
Police responded to a report of two people with spray paint in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Perinton on Friday. The suspects were not caught, but police found racist graffiti on a vehicle in the lot and on a garage door and electrical box. The next day, police responded to a house fire not far from the apartment complex. Police reportedly discovered evidence that the fire was intentionally set. No suspects have been identified as of yet. While investigating the fire, police discovered a swastika and racist graffiti spray painted on a church on the same street.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“These disturbing and possibly linked incidents must be thoroughly investigated by law enforcement authorities. With violent acts inspired by bigotry on the rise nationwide, it is essential that every possible threat is taken seriously. We urge police to investigate a possible bias motive in these crimes.”
She said CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Jewish hatred, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR-NY has condemned several other disturbing hate incidents in recent weeks:
