(NEW YORK, NY, 4/13/2020) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the racially motivated vandalism of NYC’s Jeju Noodles Bar.

The racist graffiti, reading, “Stop Eating Dogs,” sparked alarm in the West Village community. Jeju Noodle Bar owner, Douglas Kim, is calling this incident a hate crime. It would fall among 23 similarly hateful incidents currently being investigated by the city’s hate crime task force. Beyond economic factors, Kim claimed he felt compelled to close the restaurant’s doors as his employees “felt unsafe” commuting to work.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Litigation Director Ahmed Mohamed stated:

“It is unacceptable that these incidents continue to happen in New York City.  New Yorkers must come together and reject the intensifying hate that is targeting the Asian-American community. Public officials must step forward to condemn this harassment and commit to a better, more inclusive City. CAIR-New York continues to express solidarity with the entire Asian-American community in these trying times.”

This incident continues a frightening string of bias attacks targeting the Asian community in New York City and nationwide.
