(NEW YORK, NY, 4/8/2020) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an alleged acid attack targeting an Asian-American woman in Brooklyn.

CAIR-NY is also calling on the NYPD to investigate the alleged attack as a hate crime.

In a video, a man sneaks up from behind the 39-year-old Asian-American woman and pours fluid on her as she is taking out garbage. NYPD believes the fluid was an acid.  The woman is stable at Maimonides Hospital with second degree burns on her upper body, face and hands.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Litigation Director Ahmed Mohamed stated:

“It is absolutely deplorable and terrifying that this could happen in New York City. New Yorkers must come together and reject the hate that is targeting the Asian-American community. The NYPD must initiate a hate crime investigation into this attack. We pray for this woman’s health and safety and express our solidarity with the entire Asian-American community.”

This incident continues a frightening string of bias attacks targeting the Asian community.
