CAIR-NY Condemns Hate Attack on Jewish, Hasidic Man
(NEW YORK, NY, 05/06/19) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the bias-motivated attack on a Jewish, Hasidic man in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
According to reports, a Hasidic man, wearing religious attire, was confronted by a group of men and without saying a word one of the men punched the victim in the face. Another man in the group, shouted anti-Semitic slurs, including “you (expletive) Jew!”
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident.
“The assault against a Jewish man perpetrated because of his faith is despicable and intolerable,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “CAIR-NY offers its empathy to the victim and appreciation to the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force for its ongoing investigation. As Muslims celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, we also offer prayers for an end to the hatred that spur such crimes.”
CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community have in the past expressed solidarity with Jewish, Christian, Native American, African-American, and Sikh communities in New Mexico, Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, Alabama, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Ohio, Texas, and other states following acts of hate, threats, violence, vandalism, arson, or bombings.
Individuals in New York are asked to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR-NY at (646) 665-7599, or by filing a report at: https://www.cair-ny.org/incident-report/
