CAIR-NY Calls for Hate Crime Probe After Man Caught on Video Setting Fire Outside Mosque
(NEW YORK, N.Y., 12/12/2019) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for a fire set outside a local mosque.
Members of the Bangla Bazar Jame Masjid in Parkchester say a man was caught on surveillance video setting a fire outside the Islamic house of worship on Tuesday and seeming to try to set the building ablaze. The NYPD is treating the incident as a case of criminal mischief.

“Because of the increase in hate incidents targeting the American Muslim and other minority communities, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this attempted act of arson,” said CAIR-NY Litigation Director Ahmed Mohamed.
He noted that CAIR has reported a spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
