CAIR-NY Condemns Apparent Anti-Semitic Attack in Brooklyn

(NEW YORK, NY, 10/14/18) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today condemned the apparent anti-Semitic attack on a 62-year-old man in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn.

According to media reports, Police arrested Farrukh Afzal, 37, of Staten Island, charging him with assault as a hate crime, criminal mischief and harassment.  The incident was captured on a video that has already been circulated widely on social media.

“It is appalling to see this sort of violence unfold in broad daylight,” said CAIR-NY Legal Director Albert Cahn. “All New Yorkers must unite against this sort of violence. If this was motivated by anti-Semitism as alleged, it would truly be heartbreaking; this cannot become New York’s new normal. This incident also highlights the need for the type of bystander-intervention education that CAIR-NY has called on the city and state to support for years. Hopefully this latest incident inspires elected officials to support the programing to ensure that no New Yorker will again stand by when our neighbors are attacked.”
