CAIR-NY Condemns Racist Vandalism Found at Long Island School

(New York, N.Y., 8/29/17) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned neo-Nazi, white supremacist and gang related vandalism targeting a middle and high school in Syosset, Long Island.

Police said a security guard found swastikas, profanities, and MS-13 tags spray-painted on the doors, walls, and windows of Syosset High School early Sunday morning, August 27, 2017. Students and their parents discovered the hateful messages the following morning during a freshman orientation.

“It is sad that our children are being exposed to such hatred in an environment that is supposed to be welcoming and safe," said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. "We encourage local authorities to investigate fully and the schools to use this incident as a teachable moment by offering educational programs that promote greater understanding."

On May 16th, 2017, CAIR-NY condemned an allegedly bias-motivated arson attack on the home of an African-American family in upstate New York.

CAIR also recently called for a hate crime investigations of racist graffiti in Wilmington, Del., and racist vandalism targeting residents in Green Township, Cincinnati, Ohio.
