CAIR-NY Condemns Anti-Arab Vandalism of Bronx Deli

(NEW YORK, NY, 10/11/2017) -- The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the anti-Arab vandalism of a Yemeni-owned deli in the Bronx.

Police report that the deli was vandalized with the words “Arabs Keep Out” on Sunday morning. The words were scrawled across the store's front door on Ampere Avenue, in the Country Club neighborhood. The NYPD is currently investigating this incident as a hate crime.

“We’re concerned that once again, a minority community -- the Arab-American community -- is targeted with hatred and bigotry,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “While we are glad to see the NYPD taking this threat seriously, we expect them to take the same active approach with all other hate crimes."

“This terrible incident is part of a much larger trend, a city-wide increase in hate crimes,” said CAIR-NY Legal Director Albert Fox Cahn. “This year is on track to have the highest number of anti-Muslim hate crimes recorded in New York State.”

CAIR-NY has dealt with a number of recent hate incidents targeting New York Muslims and members of other minority communities.
